On February 10th Italy commemorates the victims of the foibe and the exodus of the Giuliano-Dalmatian population in the occasion of the Day of Remembrance.

The “foibe” were deep karstic caverns into which, during and after World War II, hundreds of Italians were thrown—alive or dead—victims of brutal violence amidst the chaos of the war’s aftermath and the shifting of national borders. Millions of others fled the violence, forced to abandon the lands they had called home, embarking on a long and painful exodus toward Italy.

On this day, we pause to honor the suffering, resilience, and hope of those who endured this dark chapter in history, ensuring that the memory of these atrocities is never forgotten. The Day of Remembrance not only pays tribute to the victims but also encourages us to reflect on the value of peace and the importance of peaceful coexistence among nations.

A ceremony was held at the Quirinal Palace, attended by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and President Sergio Mattarella, while the words “I Remember” illuminated the Farnesina Palace.
