- Regulation (EU) 2017/2226 established a centralized system for registering the entry and exit of third-country nationals crossing the Schengen external borders for a short stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, called the Entry Exit System (EES). This new system is intended to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of border controls. This system, scheduled to enter into force on October 12th 2025, will apply to both third-country nationals requiring a short-stay entry visa and those who are exempt from one. It will generally replace the stamping of passports, while also providing reliable data on the crossing of external borders. The new system will not apply to third-country nationals holding long-term national visas and residence permits issued by Schengen States, citizens of San Marino, Andorra, Monaco, and the Vatican City, as well as citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) and the Swiss Confederation, crew members, sovereigns, heads of state, and members of official delegations. More information in all official EU languages and in four non-EU languages (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Turkish) is available at the following link: EES / ETIAS – European Union
- In application of Legislative Decree 145 of 11 October 2024, starting from 11 January 2025, the mandatory acquisition of fingerprints will also come into force for national entry visas (type D). The methods of acquisition and any exceptions are the same as those currently in force for short-stay visas (art. 13 of the Visa Code).
- Please note that starting from 1 February 2025, all Tajik and Uzbek citizens who need to transit in the international areas of Italian airports, during stopovers or routes of an international flight, must be in possession of an Airport Transit Visa (ATV). Please remember that, based on the procedures set out in art. 26 of the European Union Visa Code, the airport transit visa allows the foreigner subject to this requirement to access the international transit area of an airport located on Italian territory without entering the territory of the Member State that issued the visa (Italy). Exceptions to the ATV requirement are provided for citizens who fall into the categories set out in art. 3 paragraph 5 of the Visa Code, which can be consulted at the following link: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/IT/TXT/?uri=celex%3A32009R0810 For completeness of information, the same contains the lists of all third countries whose citizens must be in possession of an ATV when passing through the international transit areas of airports located in the Schengen area.
