{"id":4045,"date":"2026-07-23T17:21:02","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T14:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambtallinn.esteri.it\/?p=4045"},"modified":"2026-07-23T17:23:23","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T14:23:23","slug":"paper-identity-cards-no-longer-valid-for-international-travel-from-3-august","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambtallinn.esteri.it\/en\/news\/dall_ambasciata\/2026\/07\/paper-identity-cards-no-longer-valid-for-international-travel-from-3-august\/","title":{"rendered":"PAPER IDENTITY CARDS NO LONGER VALID FOR INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL FROM 3 AUGUST"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As of August 3, 2026, paper identity cards will no longer be valid for international travel, regardless of the expiration date printed on the back.<\/p>\n<p>Decree-Law No. 108 of June 26, 2026, has introduced several key changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identification purposes: Valid (unexpired) paper identity cards may still be used as a means of identification when dealing with the Italian Public Administration, public service providers, and Consulates.<\/li>\n<li>Emergency travel documents: In urgent cases, Italian Municipalities (<em>Comuni<\/em>) may issue a temporary, non-renewable identity document valid for travel. This document will have a maximum validity of 6 months. Please note that it may not be accepted by all foreign countries; you should verify entry requirements on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viaggiaresicuri.it\/home\">Viaggiare Sicuri website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please contact our Consular Section to find out how to apply for an Electronic Identity Card (CIE): <a href=\"https:\/\/ambtallinn.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/identity-cards\/\">Identity Cards \u2013 Embassy of Italy in Tallinn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, as stipulated by Law No. 11 of January 19, 2026, Italian citizens residing abroad and registered with AIRE have been able to apply for a CIE at any Italian Municipality since June 1st.
