Sanctions for failure to register with AIRE

Registration with AIRE is a right and a duty of the citizen (Law no. 470/1988, art. 6) and constitutes the prerequisite for using the consular services provided by representations abroad and for the exercise of important rights. It should be noted that law no. 213, art.1, paragraph 242 of 30 December 2023 introduced a fine of up to 1,000 euros for each year of failure to register with AIRE, for a maximum of 5 years, for all Italian citizens residing abroad.
